HOW DOES MY BATTERY WORK?

A battery is an electrochemical device that stores chemical energy and releases it when electrical energy is needed, such as when you start your car.

An automotive battery:

  • Supplies power to the starting and ignition systems of your vehicle
  • Supplies additional power when your vehicle's needs exceed the charging system's supply.
  • Acts as a voltage stabilizer in your vehicle's electrical system

Automotive batteries are lead acid batteries, a technology used for the past 100 years.

A lead acid battery works by immersing two dissimilar metals into electrolyte to create a voltage. The battery is made up of two materials:

  • A positive electrode
  • A negative electrode

These work together to create the charge your battery needs to start your vehicle's engine

What are Cold Cranking Amps?

Cold Cranking Amps (CCAs) is a rating used by the battery industry to show how well a new battery can start an engine in cold temperatures. The international cca test is conducted at (-18 degrees Celsius)

This measurement is important for batteries sold in Europe and North America, but less relevant in Australia, which is a hotter climate.

Most batteries meet the CCA requirements of the selected application. Because of this, other measurements of battery performance, such as battery life, are also important to consider.

At Newcastle Batteries we have a wide range of battery brand's. So it's important to choose the right brand for the right application.

Please give us a call at our Wickham or Warners Bay branch and let us know what your looking for in a battery. We will do our best to guide you towards the battery that gives your vehicle it's best results.
